The Truth About Standardized Testing

...is that the SAT was a lot easier than it was probably supposed to be. Seriously, if I missed any of the multiple choice questions about writing, I deserve to be shot. And there were maybe two or three math questions that were challenging, and about that many in the critical reading section. At risk of sounding like I'm bragging about my vocabulary, there were words on that test that I'd never even heard of, and I'm the kid with the reputation for being a walking dictionary.

The other big truth about standardized testing is that it is BORING. Horribly, terribly, awfully boring. As in "okay, I'm done with five minutes to spare, can I take a nap now please? since it's not even 9 AM on a Saturday morning?" kind of boring.

Well actually, that's just the it's before 9 AM on a Saturday morning feeling. But it was also boring.

One more big truth: 25 minutes is NOT enough time to write an essay worth anything. It really isn't. Even for people who write often and well (I like to think I'm one of those people, but I can only confirm the first part) -- maybe especially for those people - 25 minutes is enough time to scratch out a couple of paragraphs that are vaguely similar to something that could, with revision, be the beginnings of a decent essay.

Especially after spending the last several months taking AP English Language and Composition, also known as How To Write Good Essays in 40 Minutes for the AP Exam. 40 minutes. Not 25. Writing an essay in 25 minutes is like...is like...giving JK Rowling a week to write a Harry Potter book.

Okay, maybe not that extreme. But you get the idea.

In other news, I feel like a sufficiently well-practiced driver now. Once I can parallel park (the one essential skill that Mr. Driving Instructor Man didn't even halfway teach me), I'll be ready to tackle the road test. And then...then I will be a licensed driver.

Honestly, that scares me a little bit.

Signing off now to go do homework before CH eats me.

  1. Boring? What do you expect of a test whose name ("SAT") doesn't mean anything? It used to mean something, but then they found out that it probably didn't measure what the name indicated, so rather than get rid of the test, they got rid of the name.
